A birthday of favourite dishes
An informal buffet with a warm main, salads and room for the birthday cake.
- Tomato-mozzarella salad and a mixed bread basket
- Beef goulash with small bread dumplings
A milestone birthday in the evening needs a different plan from an afternoon gathering with cake. Start with the birthday person's preferences, the generations attending and whether the food needs to provide a complete meal.
Plan this occasion
Note when most guests will arrive and whether a surprise or short speech is planned. Small welcome bites can bridge the first arrivals; start the warm meal when the main group is actually ready to eat together.
Choose one or two culinary directions rather than many similar dishes. At a buffet, children and older guests need reachable food, places to sit and any necessary help; provide a complete plant-based main as a separate choice.

Coordinate cake cutting, dessert and coffee so they do not all arrive at once. For a party at home, fridge space, used tableware and later collection matter just as much as delivery.
It depends on duration and timing. If the celebration replaces dinner, the portions must form a sufficiently substantial meal.
A cake you provide can be considered in the schedule. Agree chilling, arrival, cutting and responsibilities beforehand.
Start with favourite dishes and the serving format, then agree quantities, alternatives, staffing and equipment for the actual event.
